Dream Six

I was sitting on the grass watching planes take off. It was a beautiful day with perfectly clear skies. Looking at them made me feel a little uneasy, as it got me thinking about being on a plane. Knowing it might be unwise, I turned away and watched the clear sky opposite. There were birds gliding through the air easily. I felt at peace again. A loud rumbling noise got my attention. It was followed by what started as a low pitched groan and rose to a whine. I could see before me a giant plane, its engines on fire as it plummeted down at great speed. I couldn’t look away.

The plane started to crumple as it impacted with the ground, creating a gigantic boom. It slid along for a distance before colliding with a building and exploding into a massive fireball. I turned away and looked at the planes taking off. They continued to do so, continually, without any pause. It was as if they didn’t care that one had crashed. I knew what I had to do, but I didn’t like it. I walked over to the airport. I tried to delay things by buying a ticket, but they rushed me through the security and got me on to the tarmac. I was shown to what looked like a medium size plane. I walked up the stairs and was directed to my seat, by the window. The regular anxiety set in.

What made it worse, was that I was aware enough to know that bad things were coming. The plane filled up, and taxied around for a while. Then it accelerated incredibly quickly. My stomach lurched while I felt the g-forces. We continued to climb, but didn’t quite level out. I heard an announcement over the intercom.

“G’day this is the captain speaking. We’ve hit a spot of bother and we’ll have to make a water landing. It should be fine, I don’t think anyone will die,” the voice said. I felt the panic set in, and braced myself for the impact. I could feel the plane dropping, combined with the groan and whine I had heard before. It conjured up the image of the giant plane explosion, even though I knew it was a water landing.

A wave of force hit us, and I heard an accompanying splash. Our momentum slowed and then with a shudder we stopped. I was wet with sweat. Then I was wet with water. Water was seeping into the cabin. I grabbed my life jacket from below the seat and put it on. I followed the crowd out the emergency exit and rode the slide down into the water. I inflated my life jacket and bobbed around in the water. I was frozen from the cold. I was shaking from a mixture of adrenaline and chill. Eventually a small boat came and collected me, dropping me off at a small wharf.

As soon as I placed my feet on dry land I felt much better. My clothes dried instantly and my life jacket vanished.
